How truffle hunting in the Langhe works: trifolao, dog and woods

A truffle hunt near Alba is not a guided stroll. You go out with a trifolao, the Piedmontese truffle hunter, and his dog, almost always a Lagotto Romagnolo or a mixed breed trained from puppyhood. The group follows the dog through poplars, oaks, limes and willows in the woods of the Langhe, Roero or Monferrato; when the dog marks a spot, the trifolao digs with a small hoe called a zappino, checks the truffle and fills the hole so the ground keeps producing. Usually something turns up, but no serious operator guarantees a white truffle: if a listing promises one, be suspicious.

The standard format is 1.5–2 hours in the woods plus 30–60 minutes of tasting at a farmhouse: fried eggs or tajarin with shaved truffle, cured meats, a glass of Barbera or Nebbiolo. Many experiences start in Alba or the villages around it; Roddi is home to the Università dei Cani da Tartufo, the truffle-dog school founded in 1880 by the Monchiero family. From Turin allow about an hour and a quarter by car: non-drivers pick the version with transfers or pair the hunt with a wine day in the Langhe.

Options and prices: basic hunt, sunset, lunch or private from Turin

Bands observed on partner catalogues and checked regularly; the item that moves the bill is shaved white truffle at the table, included as a fixed quantity by some operators and charged by the gram by others, with differences of tens of euros a head. Private prices are often per group, not per person.

  • Hunt and tasting (€70–120*): best value if you reach Alba with your own car.
  • Sunset with wine (€80–130*): the dog works better in the cool and the light on the hills is the one in the photographs; you are back in Alba for dinner.
  • With lunch (€120–200*): makes sense if you actually want to eat white truffle, not just watch it come out of the ground.
  • Private from Turin (€250+*): the only option with no transport of your own, often with a stop at a Barolo or Barbaresco winery.

Alba white truffle season and the International White Truffle Fair

The Alba white truffle, Tuber magnatum Pico, is harvested in autumn: the Piedmont regional calendar typically opens the season in late September and closes it in winter, but the right window to book runs from October to December, when the truffles are ripe and you smell them from a metre away. White truffle prices per kilo swing enormously from one year to the next depending on rain and harvest, so we do not quote them: ask at the Alba market on the day.

The Fiera Internazionale del Tartufo Bianco d'Alba fills the weekends from early October to early December, with the Mercato Mondiale del Tartufo in the Cortile della Maddalena. Exact dates change every year: check them on the fair's website before fixing your hunt. On fair weekends Alba is full, hotels cost more and sunset hunts sell out weeks ahead.

Out of season hunters look for the winter black truffle (Tuber melanosporum) from December to March and the summer scorzone (Tuber aestivum): same dog, different scent and price.

Booking a truffle hunt: languages, children, clothing and cancellation

Experiences on GetYourGuide run almost all in Italian and English, some also in French or German: the trifolao often speaks only Italian or Piedmontese dialect and the guide translates. Book ahead for October and November weekends, when the 8–12 person groups fill up; free cancellation up to 24 hours before is the norm on the partner, and in heavy rain the operator usually moves the date rather than cancelling, because wet ground helps the dog.

Children are welcome: following a dog that digs is one of the few Langhe activities that keeps them awake, and many operators charge reduced rates under 12. You need closed shoes that can take mud, long trousers and a waterproof jacket; the woods are on slopes with wet leaves, so pushchairs and wheelchairs cannot get through. If truffle interests you more on the plate than in the woods, in autumn the food tours in Turin often put it on the menu without leaving the city.

Turin to Alba: car, train and how to combine the day

Alba is about 60 km from Turin: an hour and a quarter by car on the A6 and A33, 1 h 30–2 h by train with a change at Bra or Asti. From Alba station the woods are still 10–20 minutes by car: nearly all operators expect your own transport or offer a paid station pickup.

Combinations that work: hunt in the morning and winery in the afternoon, which is the autumn formula of the day trips from Turin; sunset in the woods then dinner and a night in Alba; or two days adding the Monferrato for anyone who also wants Erbaluce and vermouth. For groups of 4–8 the private format from Turin often costs about the same as four seats on a group tour and lets you choose both trifolao and winery.

Platforms and how we pick truffle experiences

For truffle hunts we check GetYourGuide first: it has the widest catalogue for Alba and the Langhe, free cancellation and local trifolai behind the operators; Tiqets and Headout add little on this topic. Prices marked * are bands observed on partner catalogues and checked regularly: the checkout price always prevails. We are neither an operator nor the fair's website: we earn a commission if you book through our links, at no extra cost to you.

Before listing an experience we check that the trifolao holds a licence, that the truffle in the tasting is declared (white, black or scorzone) and that the maximum group size is stated. Days built around Barolo and Barbaresco cellars are on the wine tours from Turin page.

FAQ

When is white truffle season in Alba?

Autumn. The Piedmont regional calendar normally opens the Tuber magnatum Pico harvest in late September and closes it in midwinter, but the months worth booking are October, November and December: the truffles are ripe, the scent is strong and the trifolai go out every day. Exact dates are set by the Region and change each year, so check them before booking a flight around them.

Can you go truffle hunting year-round?

Yes, but not for white truffle. From December to March hunters look for the winter black truffle (Tuber melanosporum), from late spring to late summer the summer truffle or scorzone (Tuber aestivum), which is far milder and far cheaper. The dog does exactly the same job, so it works well for understanding the trifolao's craft; the tasting is a different experience, and some listings do not say so plainly. Always ask which truffle is being hunted on your date.

How much does truffle hunting in Alba cost?

On partner catalogues we see €70–120* per person for a 2–3 hour hunt with tasting, €80–130* for the sunset version with wine, €120–200* with a full truffle lunch, and from €250* per person for the private day with transfers from Turin, driver and dedicated trifolao. White truffle at the table makes the difference: some formulas include a fixed amount, others charge by the gram. Prices checked regularly; the checkout price prevails.

Do you get to keep the truffles you find?

As a rule, no: the truffles belong to the trifolao, who holds the licence, the dog and the rights to the land, and they go into the group tasting or to market. Some operators let you take home a piece of summer truffle or sell you the white truffle found at market price, which in autumn can exceed the cost of the experience itself. If you want to buy truffle, the Mercato Mondiale in Alba on fair weekends is still the most transparent place.

Is truffle hunting suitable for children?

It is one of the few Langhe activities children genuinely follow: a dog running, digging and being rewarded. Most operators accept children from about 4–5 years, often at a reduced rate under 12, and the routes are short but on slopes, with roots and wet leaves: no pushchairs. The sunset format finishes late for small ones; the morning hunt with tasting is the version that works best for families.

What should I wear for a truffle hunt?

Closed shoes that can take mud or light hiking boots, long trousers, a waterproof jacket and a warm layer: Langhe woods in November mean fog and 5–8 °C. Skip strong perfume, which distracts the dog, and bring a torch if you choose the sunset hunt. Many operators lend boots on request, but sizes are limited: mention it in the booking notes.

How do I get to Alba from Turin without a car?

By train, about 1 h 30–2 h with a change at Bra or Asti, €12–16* each way; check connections, as they are not frequent. The problem comes afterwards: the woods are 10–20 minutes by car from Alba station and nearly every operator expects you to have transport or offers a paid station pickup. Without a car, the practical choice is the tour with transfers from Turin or the private format with a driver.

When is the Alba Truffle Fair and is it worth it?

On weekends from early October to early December, with the Mercato Mondiale del Tartufo in the Cortile della Maddalena, guided sensory analyses, cooking shows and the Palio degli Asini donkey race. Worth it for buying or smelling white truffle at the hunters' stalls, less so for the hunt itself: on fair weekends tours sell out, hotel prices double and the roads into Alba clog. A weekday in November for the hunt and a fair Saturday for the market is the combination we recommend.
