Canavese or Monferrato: two opposite directions from Turin
The first mistake is putting them in the same day. Canavese lies north of Turin towards the Aosta Valley: Ivrea 45–60 minutes by train, then Caluso and its Erbaluce vineyards, the castles of Masino and Agliè, the lakes of Candia and Viverone. Monferrato lies south-east: Asti 35–55 minutes by regional train, Nizza and Canelli further south, the infernot country around Casale further north. Ivrea and Asti are more than 100 km apart with no convenient link.
The old towns work perfectly by train; the wineries do not. A small producer in the hills around Vignale or Castagnole Monferrato is ten or fifteen minutes by car from the station and has no bus. So we compare three formats: a guided tour from Turin, a private driver for the day, and the train for anyone who only wants Asti or Ivrea plus an enoteca in town.
Monferrato wine tours and tastings near Asti: options and prices
The most complete product is the guided food and wine tour in Canavese from Turin: about 8 hours, a winery visit with Erbaluce and local reds, lunch or a snack of regional produce and a stop among castles and villages, from €90–110*. For Monferrato the most booked option is the wine tasting and winery visit near Asti, rated 4.7★ on GetYourGuide, from €39–60*: two to three hours, easy to pair with the train, but check whether the station transfer is included.
Groups of three or more often do better with a private driver: €400–700* per car for the day, wineries of your choice, tastings paid on the spot (€15–25* per person per winery, far less than in Barolo). The day trips from Turin catalogue starts at €50–120* and helps you weigh Monferrato against the Langhe and the lakes.
Canavese castles and Ivrea from Turin: what to see in a day
Ivrea is Italy's only industrial city on the UNESCO list: the Olivetti town, with the rationalist buildings along Via Jervis and the Palazzo Uffici, walkable from the station in a couple of hours. In February the centre turns into the Battle of the Oranges during Carnival. In an enoteca ask for Erbaluce di Caluso, dry, sparkling or passito.
The castles need a car. Castello di Masino at Caravino belongs to the FAI heritage trust, with frescoed halls and a park looking over the Serra moraine; it closes on Mondays and in deep winter. Castello di Agliè is a Savoy residence within the UNESCO Royal Residences site, with more than 300 rooms and an Italian garden; holders of the Torino+Piemonte Card should check whether entry is on the current list.
Infernot, underground cathedrals and the wines of Monferrato
Monferrato shares its UNESCO listing with the Langhe and Roero but has a different character. Around Cella Monte, Rosignano and Ozzano, families dug the infernot by hand: tiny windowless cellars in Pietra da Cantoni sandstone where bottles for ageing still rest today. In Canelli the historic sparkling-wine houses have tunnels running dozens of metres under the hill, the so-called underground cathedrals, open by reservation.
In the glass you start with Barbera d'Asti and its more structured version, Nizza; then Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato, an aromatic red that smells of roses, Grignolino, pale and tannic, and Moscato d'Asti, sweet and light, born between Canelli and Santo Stefano Belbo.
Getting to Asti and Ivrea by train, when to go, Palio and harvest
For Asti, take a direct regional train from Porta Nuova, roughly hourly, 35–55 minutes, €5–7* each way. For Ivrea, the Turin–Aosta line leaves Porta Susa and calls at Porta Nuova, 45–60 minutes at the same price; tickets in the app or at the machines, no reservation.
September is Monferrato's month: harvest, the Palio di Asti with bareback horse racing in Piazza Alfieri, the Douja d'Or with tasting counters in the centre. May and June for quiet wineries and green hills, October for autumn colour and truffle hunting; from mid-November to February several castles close and many wineries receive visitors by appointment only.
Monferrato or Langhe? Combining day trips and how we choose the tours
If you have a single wine day and have never been to Piedmont, the Langhe wine tours remain the first choice: Barolo, Barbaresco and Alba have more wineries open without appointment and more tours in English. Monferrato and Canavese are the second trip, for repeat visitors or anyone who prefers fewer coaches and lower prices. If food comes before wine, the Turin food tours need no travel; for a tailor-made day see the private tours, and for a change of scenery Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta.
We give priority to GetYourGuide for tours and tastings because it has the widest Piedmont catalogue and, as a rule, free cancellation up to 24 hours before; Tiqets for the Torino+Piemonte Card and museums, Headout as fallback. We always check whether transport from Turin is included, how many wineries you actually visit and which language the guide speaks. Prices observed on partner catalogues and checked regularly; the checkout price prevails.

FAQ
Monferrato or Langhe: which day trip from Turin should I pick?
The Langhe have Barolo, Barbaresco, Alba and the reputation; Monferrato has Barbera, Ruché, the infernot cellars and half the visitors. A three-wine tasting at a well-known Langhe estate often costs €25–40*, in Monferrato €15–25*. If it is your first time in Piedmont and you want the famous labels, go to the Langhe with a wine tour; if you prefer small producers, open landscapes and lower prices, Monferrato is the better call. Both belong to the same UNESCO vineyard-landscape site.
How do I get from Turin to Asti by train?
Direct regional trains leave Torino Porta Nuova roughly every hour and take 35–55 minutes depending on stops; a ticket costs about €5–7* each way. Asti's old town is a ten-minute walk from the station. For Nizza Monferrato and Canelli you change to a second regional train; for wineries in the hills you need a car, a taxi or a tour that includes the transfer.
How do I get to Ivrea and the Canavese castles?
Ivrea sits on the Turin–Aosta line: 45–60 minutes by regional train from Porta Susa or Porta Nuova, about €5–7*. The centre and the Olivetti buildings are walkable from the station. Masino and Agliè castles, however, are out in the countryside: without a car, the guided tour from Turin or a private driver is the practical answer. Agliè is a Savoy residence and part of the Royal Residences circuit.
How much does a Monferrato or Canavese wine tour cost?
The guided food and wine tour in Canavese from Turin starts at about €90–110* for 8 hours with winery visits and tastings; the tasting with winery visit near Asti costs €39–60*. A private driver for the day runs €400–700* per car, tastings excluded (budget €15–25* per person per winery). The regional train is the budget option at €5–7* each way. Prices observed on partner catalogues and checked regularly; the checkout price prevails.
Which wines will I taste in Monferrato and Canavese?
In Monferrato the reds are Barbera d'Asti (and its more concentrated version, Nizza), Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato with its rose scent, and Grignolino, pale and tannic; Moscato d'Asti, sweet and low in alcohol, is born around Canelli and Santo Stefano Belbo. In Canavese the signature wine is Erbaluce di Caluso, a white made dry, sparkling or as a passito, and at Carema Nebbiolo grows on stone pergolas right under the Alps.
What are the infernot of Monferrato?
They are tiny cellars dug by hand into Pietra da Cantoni, a soft sandstone found only in the Casale part of Monferrato, around Cella Monte, Rosignano and Ozzano. They have no light or ventilation and were used to store the family's best bottles; UNESCO lists them alongside the vineyard landscapes. Most are inside private houses and can be visited only by appointment, through the Ecomuseo della Pietra da Cantoni or with a tour that has arrangements with the owners.
When is the best time to visit Asti and Monferrato?
September is the full month: harvest in the vineyards, the Palio di Asti horse race in Piazza Alfieri and the Douja d'Or wine fair in the centre. Dates move every year, so check them before booking the train. May and June give green hills and quiet wineries; October brings autumn colour and pairs with truffle hunting. In January and February many castles are closed and several wineries receive visitors by appointment only.
Can I do Asti or Ivrea in half a day?
Yes, but only the town centre. Asti by train, two hours between the Gothic cathedral, the Torre Troyana and an enoteca, then back to Turin for lunch or dinner works well. The same goes for Ivrea with the Olivetti walk along Via Jervis. Hillside wineries, the Masino and Agliè castles and the infernot need a car and at least a full day; they do not fit into a half day alongside Turin.
